Garish Tuesday

Today is Grey Tuesday, but since my site is grey 365 days a year, I decided to use my other stylesheet, garish, instead. Garish randomly generates a color for every css block and attribute, resulting in an awful presentation. In fact, it makes the site unreadable 99% of the time.

In case you don't know what the Grey Album is, it is DJ Danger Mouse's musical conjunction of the Beatle's White Album and Jay-Z's Black Album, with the title supplying the appropriate visual metaphor.

If you don't know why this album's existence is an issue, you are probably overpaying a lot of money to the price-fixing music Cartel for compact disc audio media.

### UPDATE ###

Now that it is Wednesday, the stylesheet will go back to normal. If you want to see this post in its native format, click here. To go back to normal, click here.

Stizzar Wizzars

In case you were disappointed about the non-preservation of our cultural heritage through the initial laser blast of Greedo, and moreover its release in bastard form on DVD, you can always take solace in the fact that some members of the SW universe are still keepin' it real.

Boba Fett, for one, is still holdin' shit down in the streets. If you are in Florida on Feb. 27th, you can see him mashing it up in miniature form at Subcultures: The Art of the Action Figure. The Suckadelic crew will be there, and they will also be in San Francisco at the Elbo Room on March 1st to drop some Middle Earth knowledge on y'all at Lords of the Rhymes.

But I digress, fair fans of Obi and Gandolph alike. This is about bounty hunter street cred.

Here you go: MC Chris rockin' the Boba Fett.

Urban Land Mines

In the form of manhole covers. From The Economist Cities Guide: New York Briefing:

In January, a woman walking her dog died after stepping on an electrified manhole cover. Since the incident, Consolidated Edison (Con Ed), the regional utility company, has found more than 280 service-box lids, manhole covers and street lights with stray voltage passing through, capable of producing anything from mild to fatal shocks. Responding to an outcry over public safety, Con Ed has promised to fix the problem, and to test all 250,000 potential hot spots.

Manhole covers are a steady source of headaches in the city. In 2003 there were around 4,600 manhole incidents, including almost 1,300 in which the lids blew off, according to the New York Post. Recent winter storms have only worsened the situation, as the rock salt used to fight icy conditions seeps underground and eats into wires. Shoes typically insulate walkers, but discomfited New Yorkers are taking care to watch their step.

280 out of 250,000 may seem somewhat remote, but next time I am in New York, it will be the old "step on a crack" school rhyme as I stroll through the streets.

Reason #238 for HDTV

Or, at least watching the Super Bowl in HDTV: you can get a hi-res punch-in on the hardware-enhanced mammary gland of Janet Jackson. Is that a solar flare? No, it's the areola.
